A New Year has begun. January brings with a fresh start, new beginnings and not a whole lot of flowers! Winter in Maine has officially set in and there is more than just a chill in the air. Jack Frost is nipping at our nose, toes and fingertips. Inside most people are taking down their holiday decorations, some are anxious to regain their space while others may feel a bit of decorating let down.
If you are one who enjoys the clean space and absence of decorations this time of year, embrace it. Winter is a quiet season when it comes to flowers but as the saying goes “Absence makes the heart grow fonder”. The anticipation of spring blooms, hours spent thumbing through next years seed catalogs and pinning garden plans on Pinterest can help with a case of cabin fever!
However, if the thought of a petal-less table top makes you want to book a flight south, there are a few things you can do. A small but fragrant winter friend is the Paperwhite. These small bulbs can be placed in a shallow bowl, mason jar, or even a pretty tea cup. With a few pebbles in the bottom and water, these small white flowers can bring a much needed floral pick-me-up.
Re-purposing your birch twigs and bows, is another option for simple winter decorations. Simply take out your ornaments and add some candles, or battery operated mini lights to create a beautiful winter display.
As they say “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” So whether you’re enjoying your reclaimed holiday space, or sprucing it up with winters’ bounty, Spring WILL be here before we know it!
